POEMS NB
In addition to his work as a writer, Luke Fischer is a curator and convener of poetry and artistic events, which often involve conversation between poets and other artists (mostly musicians but also visual artists). Since May 2013 he has regularly hosted a private Poetry and Music Salon in North Bondi, which has featured a number of Australia's most distinguished poets as well as newer voices in Australian poetry, and has included performances of classical music by eminent and emerging musicians. This Salon fosters an intimate sharing of ideas, poetry and music in a context that recognises the intrinsic value of these cultural pursuits.
Luke Fischer also organises public events that reflect the values embodied in the Salon (sometimes under the name of POEMS NB––in part an acronym of the POEtry and Music Salon in North Bondi). These public events have included: 'Poetry and Music Salon: Do Poets Tell the Truth?' (co-organised with Word Travels and the SWF) at the 2014 Sydney Writers' Festival; 'Poetry and Music Salon: Poetry vs Prose' at the 2015 Sydney Writers' Festival; the poetry event 'The Language of Water' (part of the City of Sydney Art & About program) in conjunction with the art project 'H2O Water Bar' by renowned Australian artist Janet Laurence; and 'Voicing the Earth: Poetry Reading and Musical Performance' as part of the interdisciplinary symposium 'The Nexus of Life: Ecological Crisis and Creative Understanding' (2017) at the University of Sydney. The next public event will be 'Sounding Trees: Poetry and Music Salon' in conjunction with Janet Laurence's exhibition 'After Nature' at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. POEMS NB will continue to curate events that encourage cross-pollination between poetry and other art forms, and further collaborative association between poets, intellectuals, musicians and artists. (Below can be found a list of poets and writers who have participated in POEMS NB events.)
POEMS NB is open to suggestions for future events involving collaboration with literary festivals, arts organisations, galleries, music schools, universities, etc. If you have a query or proposal, please contact Luke Fischer.
