This six-week workshop led by poet-philosophers, Luke Fischer and Jakob Ziguras, will benefit anyone who wants to improve their writing and expand their understanding of imagination. It will combine creative writing, close-reading of exemplary poems, and discussion of philosophical texts on imagination and poetry from the romantic period to the present. The workshop is open to adults at all levels of experience.
Participants will have the opportunity to workshop several poems and to share their own poems at a public event at Bookoccino in Avalon on World Poetry Day, 21 March 2025.
Luke Fischer is the author of six books and an editor of various volumes, including his third collection of poems A Gamble for my Daughter (Vagabond Press, 2022) and Philosophical Fragments as the Poetry of Thinking (Bloomsbury, 2024). Fischer has led poetry workshops and taught philosophy classes in Germany, the United States and Australia. He holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Sydney, where he is also an honorary associate. For more information visit: www.lukefischer.net

Testimonials from Luke Fischer’s previous workshop ‘Reimagining Nature’:
‘Luke brings a unique set of gifts to his teaching. His extensive knowledge and experience as a poet and philosopher are reflected in the readings provided, the rich poetry prompts and inspiring discussions. He provides gentle, thoughtful feedback on poems and creates a safe space for workshopping. Whether you are starting out on your poetry journey or an experienced poet, there is much to be learned and enjoyed during this course.’
––Alison Gorman
‘From the moment Luke brought in foliage, flowers and shells and asked us to examine one, to pay close attention, to sketch it, to close our eyes and imagine it, to open our eyes and see what we’d missed and then to take home our notes and write a poem––I knew this would be a course with a difference.
A wonderful mix of close observation of nature, a reminder to pay attention, readings, theoretical discussions, workshopping our poems and writing prompts.
Absorbing and invigorating.’
––Genevieve Osborne
‘Luke’s workshop was a wonderful immersion in Nature Poetry. The weekly readings, discussions, creative writing and poetry writing exercises were stimulating, educational and so inspirational. I explored and developed my own writing alongside our group’s creative endeavours, with supportive feedback and invaluable discussions. Thank you.’
